A testimonial to a Paris of love With the eye of the photographer, Gérard Uféras shares 70 weddings or civil partnerships celebrated and feted in the city. He offers all lovers of Paris a vision full of optimism. Through more than a hundred photographs, he testifies to a city where everyone is free to commit, choose, move towards other people. By displaying these moments of happiness combining generations, social, cultural or religious origins, he tenderly fights off the temptation for self-withdrawal and the apparent standardisation of our cities. The photographer thus illustrates his conviction of a Parisian identity with strong diversity, capturing the joint promise of these “differences that love unites”, the gamble and wonder of the approach that consists in “projecting oneself in the future and coming out of oneself to move towards a different other”. In this exhibition, Gérard Uféras offers an insight trained by the school of photojournalism and above all things, receptiveness to human beings. “We all want a harmonious life where everyone can encounter love and build a life in a world of tolerance and respect. In Paris we are lucky to live in a place that allows and facilitates that diversity”. Slipping in close to individuals, infatuated with mystery and harmony, his “photographic haikus” naturally capture these moments of commitment and enthusiasm. Paris sparkles in photographers’ eyes With this work, Gérard Uféras offers a continuity with the exhibitions that have seen the city successfully pay tribute, in recent years, to major photographers - Willy Ronis, Doisneau, Izis - who sought to reproduce the personality of their adopted city. The Médicis Award “hors les murs” winner in 1990, Gérard Uféras received a World Press Photo award in 1997 and the SCAM Grand Prix in 1999. His photographs, presented in a retrospective at the Maison Européenne de la Photographie in 2009, are featured in major art museum collections worldwide and his work is supported by renowned sponsors. Paris d’amour has received the support of BNP Paribas from the very outset of the artistic project.
